P. 16
“It would be good if the teachers followed
the things I said in my ‘one-page-profile’.
I struggle with MLE (open plan) and
worry about getting my work done, and it is
so hard to focus, it would be good if I could move
my desk into a quiet pod to work. I would like the
teachers to change it so only me and my friend
can go in the pod because right now there are
heaps of people in it and it’s really loud and busy.
It would help if I could go to an office on Monday
morning to help me settle in.” - (V. 9y.)
“Things that teachers can do to help are explaining
things more thoroughly and remembering that they
have children with certain problems in their class”
- (C. 15y.)
What can teachers do?
“What really really helps me is going into another
teachers’ office, because I really like her and she
is so so helpful. She is really nice, she is kind,
she says it’s alright for me to go into her office,
she understands me and how I struggle with
anxiety. Holding and squeezing putty helps
me, keep breathing. Wearing a watch really
helps so I know what time it is, reading and
going to the library, and doodling. Maybe
if I need time to myself I would like to go
to a teacher’s office. But if I do I worry that
the SENCO will feel like I have betrayed her.”
- (V. 9y.)
“I am not sure how the teacher can help me.”
- (R. 10y.)
