on, how games are played and who is doing what. Planning
and organizing themselves, being flexible and adjusting to
different situations can be a challenge. Also, knowing what they
feel, managing their feelings when they are overwhelmed, and
sharing this with others can be extremely difficult. Difficulty
with regulating their emotions often looks like tantrums or
uncontrolled meltdowns. Children might injure themselves or
others, and are often described as having anger-issues (Mazefsky
& White, 2014, Ashburner et al., 2010).
In Short...
School often seems a ‘mismatch’ with the needs and
preferences of children with ASD and can result in feeling
stressed, worried or anxious. But, while school can be
complex for children with ASD, it is also an ideal place to
learn and practice new behaviours and coping strategies.
